A LATE 19TH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY MAHOGANY INLAID ROLL-TOP ‘BONHEUR DU JOUR’ OR SECRETAIRE DESK, the original ‘Bonheur du Jour’ was designed in France in the mid-18th century for lady letter-writers. This example has a beautiful hand painted scene to the roll top showing two women & a man in a landscape. Above the roll top are three drawers each decorated with ormolu mounts; when the roll top is pushed backwards further drawers are revealed and a pull out leather topped writing surface. Beneath is a single long drawer. All raised on slender fluted tapered legs with carved foliage designed spade feet. The sides are also decorated. Condition: over all very good/excellent. There is some minor ware and loss – commensurate with age & use. Dimensions: 124 x 92 x 49cm (H x W x D) Height to the desk 82cm.
