AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY TAXIDERMY AFRICAN LEOPARD SKIN RUG (PANTHERA PARDUS PARDUS).
Provenance: Shot by Dr Roman Mogilnicki 1942-1944, Tanganyika (part of present-day Tanzania). He was given permission to hunt for the purposes of feeding the emaciated displaced refugees from Europe during World War 2. Dr Roman Mogilnicki, graduated in medicine from the University of Zagreb, 1929. In west Ukraine, he was arrested in 1939 and deported to a Siberian forced labour camp. Given amnesty to join General Anders Polish Army in 1941 under British command in Tehran. Sent to a displaced peoples camp in Tanganyika where he worked as a Medical Officer from October 1942 to July 1944. He hunted for the purposes of feeding the emaciated displaced refugees from Europe during World War 2. He later worked in several senior medical posts including Director of the Sanitorium for Tuberculosis for Polish refugees, and resident Medical Officer for Toronto Sisal Plantation Ltd where he planned and built a hospital of 110 beds, at that time considered one of the best in the Tanganyika. He remained and raised his family in Tanganyika, later Tanzania, until 1969. (170cm x 120cm).
