FRANCE: 'L'INTRANSIGEANT' ART DECO BRONZE AWARD MEDAL, c1925, by Georges Contaux (1891-1984), after A. M. Cassandre, futuristic and screaming head right, L'INTRANS across brow reverse: pillars linked at top by olive and oak wreath, unnamed, 60mm (cf. Noonans auction, 9 May 2024, lot 268), a splendid Art Deco medal, extremely fine, obverse brightly patinated, reverse dulled, rare. This award or presentation medal was struck for the Parisian newspaper L'Intransigeant, in about 1925. The original design was for a poster by the influential Art Deco graphic/poster artist, Adolphe Jean Marie Mouron (1901-68), who used the nom de plume 'Cassandre'. Georges Contaux's medal hardens the lines of the head, making the image more threatening.
