CHARLES WHITING TRI-COLOUR EMBOSSED FRAME & HEAD OF GREY - c1839 album-page size (c5½x7, laid on a brown sheet) spectacular white embossed portrait of Lord Grey with fancy tri-coloured embossed frame in brown, pink and pale yellow with inverted WHITING PATENTEE imprint at foot. Part of Whitings Treasury Essays Competition entry of 9th Oct. 1839. [See Gravesons Penny Postage Centenary, p.103.] An amazing example of this virtuoso Victorian printers very best coloured printing; his proposals for Postage Stamps were in many ways the best in the Competition - he won one of the four prizes - but his printing processes were sadly rather more expensive than those of Perkins Bacon, the cotton-reel label printers!
