CHARLES WHITING TRI-COLOUR EMBOSSED FRAME & HEAD OF “GREY” - c1839 album-page size (c5½x7”, laid on a brown sheet) spectacular white embossed portrait of Lord “Grey” with fancy tri-coloured embossed frame in brown, pink and pale yellow with inverted “WHITING PATENTEE” imprint at foot. Part of Whiting’s Treasury Essays Competition entry of 9th Oct. 1839. [See Graveson’s “Penny Postage Centenary, p.103.] An amazing example of this virtuoso Victorian printer’s very best coloured printing; his proposals for Postage Stamps were in many ways the best in the Competition - he won one of the four prizes - but his printing processes were sadly rather more expensive than those of Perkins Bacon, the cotton-reel label printers! Minor soiling; rare.
