ROWLAND WARD OF PICCADILLY, LONDON, A VICTORIAN TAXIDERMY WHITE RHINOCEROS HEAD (CERATOTHERIUM SIMUM)
Provenance: From the collection of Lieutenant-Colonel Walter Hall (1891-1980) – soldier, Member of Parliament and a fanatical hunter of big game. After his death the specimen became the property of the celebrated gun company Holland and Holland and was kept at their country shooting centre near Ruislip.
The head is of considerable significance. The vast majority of antique rhino heads are Black Rhinos (Diceros bicornis), but this specimen is of a White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum), a species that was only preserved on comparatively rare occasions.
The smaller horn is authentic Rhinoceros horn. The larger horn is composite and is believed to have left the Rowland Ward factory this way. The skull is present inside the mount. The Rowland Ward paper trade label is present to the rear of the mount, along with the hand painted log number 2386. Date of Manufacture: 1905-1910.
Condition: Overall very good.
