G.B. COVER TO GERMAN STATES MISSENT TO BOTH U.S.A. AND CANADA - TRANSATLANTIC BY MISTAKE!; 3 July 1840 EL from "Edinburgh" to "Lubec" (intended for Lubeck in the German States; returning 12 unwanted lottery tickets) prepaid at the "1/10" rate (fine red "PAID at EDINR" cds on the front) but wrongly endorsed "State of Maine" in transit (Lubec is a tiny sea-port on the US/Canada border) and so sent to the USA with v. fine red "SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/LIVERPOOL" cds (6 July) on the flap; there redirected to Quebec (another miss-reading!) and so endorsed in red on flap "Mifsent to Canada. Supposed to be for Lubec in Germany" with fine red Quebec "FORWARDED" on the front, before finally being sent back across the Atlantic to Lubeck, where it was endorsed in German as having been Missent to Canada. Unique cover missent across the Atlantic twice in transit. Exhibition Item.
