A gold watch fob seal, late 18th c, the oval chalcedony matrix finely engraved with the arms of Gordon, the mount engraved Lord Adam Gordon died 13 August 1801 aged 72, 29mm h, 11.2g

General Lord Adam Gordon (c1726-1801) was a younger son of Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon and Lady Henrietta Mordaunt. A soldier and Parliamentarian, Gordon was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Scotland in 1789. In the 1760s he toured the West Indies, American colonies and Canada, intending to speculate in land. This plan he abandoned on his marriage with Jean, Dowager Duchess of Atholl in 1767. Gordon was opposed to the Treaty of Paris, having supported the loyalists. After serving for two years as Governor of Edinburgh Castle, he retired to Kincardineshire in 1798
