Launched in 2006, the Porsche Cayman is a coupé derived from the Boxster, styled originally by Pinky Lai. All early Caymans were manufactured in Finland by Valmet Automotive, but as Volkswagen assumed control of Porsche AG, production of Caymans and Boxsters after 2012 began at the Karmann plant in Osnabrück. The Cayman and second generation Boxster roadster share their mid-engined platform and many other components.
The Cayman S was powered by a 3.4-litre flat-six with a 6-speed manual transaxle, a 2.7-litre engine with 5-speed transmission was standard for the base model. An electronically controlled 5-speed automatic (Tiptronic) was also available on the S and non-S versions.
