A rare wooden rushlight holder, made completely in oak, and signed by the maker, Shropshire/Montgomeryshire borders, circa 1850

Having a plain cleft stick lever-action holder, with pin-hinge, the flat-top and 'facetted’ conical base stamped ‘W G Bound’ to underside, height 24.5cm

Provenance: Former Graham Cutts Collection

Literature: See Robert Ashley, ‘The Rushlight and Related Holders’ (2001), p. 232, pl.194, for a very similar example, again by William Bound (1829-1890).  The author notes ‘wooden rushlight holders of any form very rarely survive’, compared to forged examples ‘they are more easily broken or discarded as worthless, few examples remain’
