HMAS Sydney sinking of Emden officer's WW1 BWM and Victory Medal to Lieut J.M.C. Johnstone R.N.R. nearly extremely fine. With 10 copied pages of service details, James Montague Cholmeley Johnstone was born 10 or 16 Jan 1889 in Nottingham, appointed Midshipman 5/4/07, S/Lt 28/3/13, served on HMAS Sydney 24/5/13 to 4/10/16 and was present at the sinking of the German raider SMS Emden at the Cocos Islands on 9th November 1914. His papers confirm 'Medal presented by people of Western Australia for action with Emden, permitted to accept, but not to wear.' On his reports from Sydney, his conduct is described as unsatisfactory and not satisfactory, ability average. Missing a Star. With son's WW2 1939-1945, Pacific, France and Germany (Atlantic bar) Stars and BWM very neatly privately named to Radio Officer F.S. Johnstone Merchant Navy, nearly extremely fine. Appears to be Fitzroy S Johnstone with copy of WW2 roll confirming awards. Mounted on card with WW2 ribbon bars. Also with glass frame, but this will not be posted. (½B)
