** SCOTLAND - P.O.W. LETTER FROM PERTH TO FRANCE ENDORSED "Exd. J. Mathew" BY THE CENSOR; 1 Jan. 1814 EL (unsealed; overall toning mainly affecting contents but also affecting one line of the address) from POW "Henri Rajustet" in the "Depot de Perth" to the Mayor of Eyguieres (but Missent to Salon and so with a mainly very fine "DEB.12/SALON" on the reverse). Most unusually it is also endorsed "Exd. J. Mathew" by the Perth Camp Censor-Agent, John Mathew on the top flap. It would probably have been sent via London to Plymouth and on to Morlaix, so it was charged "11" (decimes). The writer asks the Mayor to look into some money that is due to him, and the second half of the sheet is a Power of Attorney identifying Rajustet as a "Soldat au 82e Regiment d'infantrie de Ligne, Prisonnier de Guerre au Depot de Perth", which has been counter-signed by two senior French POW Officers. This is one of only three known POW letters from Perth and the only one with censor endorsement in full.
