St Helena. 1850 Stampless cover from Chancellor Emile Kuhlmann of the French Consulate at Zanzibar to his father in Colmar, France. Backstamped with boxed "FORWARDED / BY / Your obet servt / S. SOLOMON / ST. HELENA", London backstamp (Dec 6) and "SHIP LETTER" with red boxed "COLONIES / &c. ART. 13", Calais and Colmar datestamps, charged "1/2" (crossed out) and 1/4, finally charged 30 decimes in France. Opened out, otherwise fine, a unique and remarkable cover. The Kuhlmann correspondence (comprising seven cover from Zanzibar, ten covers from France or Aden to Zanzibar, 1850-56) are described and illustrated in "Zanzibar's Postal History Legacy" by Gary Dubro; this is the second earliest of these letters and the only one sent via St. Helena.
