Note - During the English Civil War (1642-1651) the market town of Newark, Nottinghamshire was considered by both sides to be strategically important because of the Great North Way and Fosse Way. The Royalists needed to control Newark because of its strategic connection point between their headquarters in Oxford and stronghold in the North of England. Newark was besieged three times in 1643,1644 and 1645-46. Newark surrendered in May 1646 on the order of Charles I as a condition of his own surrender.
