A BOER WAR AND FIRST WORLD WAR MERITORIOUS SERVICE GROUP OF SEVEN TO THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. A group of seven comprising Queen's South Africa Medal with ghost dates with Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps named to 5316 Pte F. Rutland Glouc Regt. King's South Africa Medal with South Africa 1901 and 1902 clasps to Rutland as a Corporal, 1914 Star named to 5316 C. Sjt F.E. Rutland 1/Glouc R. War Medal and Victory Medal to Rutland as T.W.O. Cl 1. Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to 5316 Q.M. SJT F.E. Rutland and Meritorious Service Medal to Supt Clk F.E. Rutland 1/Glouc. Mounted in two rows as worn. Frederick Ernest Rutland from Cheltenham had a very successful career rising through the ranks from a Private in the Boer War. Enlisting at Bristol on the 7th May 1898 when he was 18 years 11 months old. His Boer War clasps are confirmed to the roll. A Mention in Despatches is recorded in the Gazette for the 24th December 1918 at which time Rutland is recorded in France attached to G.H.Q. 3rd Echelon. (The ribbon shows signs of an oak leaf having been attached). The Meritorious Service Medal was awarded on the 14th October 1919 whilst he was serving with the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment in France/Flanders. Mounted for display with copied research.
