** CHESTERFIELD (DERBYSHIRE) - COVER EX PAROLE P.O.W. TO FRANCE ENDORSED "P:P:L:"; 24 May 1812 EL (originally sealed with a plain wafer) from POW Major "J[ean] Teulet" (see previous 2 lots) on parole in "Chesterfield" sent to his wife in Versailles routed via London being charged "9" (decimes; rate from the Cartel port of Morlaix) on delivery. The meaning of the red manuscript "PPL" annotation at top right of the address is still not clear but may well indicate "Postage Paid to/via London" (although that postage was not paid to the Chesterfield P.O. in this case). The letter is mostly about finance for both the POW and his wife; she had received 700 livres for his lost effects (uniform and/or arms?) and acknowledging the receipt of her 12 March 1812 letter (her "No.50"). [See MFPWE, p.147.] Cross Reference: FRANCE, DERBYSHIRE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL
