HMS Edinburgh survivor's documents relating to SFX/1095 Frank Toombs Fleet Air Arm with Certificate of Service, letter dated 12/5/42 to his mother stating he was a survivor from the sinking of Edinburgh, Admiralty medal transmittal slip for 5 medals, Order For Release, Air Mechanics History Sheet, Exam Application 10/7/44, Russian certificate and letters for award of Russian 40th and 60th Anniversary Medals, newspaper cuttings etc.
The heavy cruiser Edinburgh was escorting Convoy QP11 in the Barents sea when she was torpedoed by U-456 on 29th April 1942. They tried to get back to Murmansk but were by another torpedo from a German destroyer and sank on 2nd May. She was carrying £5 million in gold which was salvaged in 1981.
His service papers show he enlisted 17/6/40, after Edinburgh, served on escort carriers Archer, Jackdaw, Vulture, Hunter, Battler etc, mostly with No 834 Sqn, discharged 27/7/45, medals listed are 1939-1945, Africa, Italy and Pacific Stars. (R)
