Japy Frères, a large slate mantel clock, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with an outside countwheel, the backplate stamped with the trademark for Japy Frères, the cream enamel chapter ring having black Arabic numerals and blued steel hands, the substantial black state case with inset gilded decoration, applied bronzed mounts, brown marble mouldings and shaped top, height 50cm. Biography Japy Frères et Cie were originally set up in circa 1771 in Beaucourt by Frederic Japy, born 1749 for the purpose of making ebauches (blanks) for watch movements. By 1810, Frederic Japy's sons Frederic-Guillaume Japy, Louis-Frederic Japy and Jean-Pierre Japy had joined the firm and renamed the firm Japy Frères et Cie following the death of their father in 1812.
