The Master of the Bedford Book of Hours, chromolithograph in gold and colours on paper, St Mark writing his Gospel - Additional MS. 18850, from The Bedford Book of Hours (1423-1430), from Illuminated Manuscripts in the British Museum, printed by William Griggs and published by Longmans and Co. in a limited edition of 500 in 1903. The Bedford Book of Hours has been described as one of the finest examples of
French art of the first half of the fifteenth century. In this particularly charming page St Mark’s symbolic lion can be seen helpfully holding the Evangelist’s ink-pot and
pen-case between his teeth whilst on the right is what appears to be St Mark’s wash-stand and towel
