MAIL TO BRITISH P.O.W. IN VERDUN IN FRANCE SENT FROM PORTSMOUTH VIA "ROTTERDAM"; Unusual 8 Oct. 1810 EL from a disgruntled father to his POW son "Mr. Josh. Smith, Prisoner of War, Verdun, France" unusually charged "11 [decimes]" but apparently posted in "ROTTERDAM" (fine s. line on front with red "C.H. 2e. R." - Correspondence Hollandaise 2nd Rayon). The contents are a brief copy of a previous letter making it clear that the writer will still send the 6s-6d per day allowance but "after much pain and bitterness brought myself to consider that I am no relation of yours". Perhaps the pervious letter had been sent via the Transport \Office in London and miscarried? Exceptional route for POW mail.Cross Reference: FRANCE, HAMPSHIRE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, NETHERLANDS
