λ An early 18th century ivory fan, with carved ivory guards and sticks, the guards with a most unusual carving, apparently a king beneath a fearsome face/mask and a further face/mask with a drum and helmet suspended from the mouth, beneath these, a fabulous bird figure, the sticks well carved and each one with a different figure either playing a musical instrument, drinking or dancing etc, the leaf mounted à langlaise fashion and hand painted in body colour with a biblical or mythological scene, the verso plain, mother of pearl washers at the rivet, length 28cm
