A RARE WILLIAM & MARY/QUEEN ANNE INLAID WRITING DESK ON STAND, CIRCA 1685-1705. The moulded top inlaid with two panels of geometric boxwood stringing above a shallow angled fall further inlaid with twin elliptical stars set within square inlaid panels with moulded edges to the fall, concealing a shallow, open box compartment with six original fitted plain drawers and original brass handles, the fall with original large butterfly hinges, above the base further inlaid with three geometric semi circles flanked by four turned legs, the centre two legs on knuckle-hinged joints, opening to support the writing fall, the six turned leg base joined by high moulded stretchers on original turned feet, the plain ends both retaining original fitted drawers, 94cm wide, 91.5cm high, 49cm deep Note - Writing desks of this period are scarce items, more so in Oak than Walnut, having the restrained sophisticated Boxwood line inlays very typical of the William and Mary period. Provenance - Albert Gautier Collection, Newton Old Hall, Tibshelf, Derbyshire. Purchased by Herbert and Norma Beedham, early to mid 1970s.
Of exceptionally fine natural colour and surface patination.
