Roman Republican, L. Hostilius Saserna AR Denarius c.48 BC. Head of the captured Gaulish chief Vercingetorix r. / Naked warriors driving biga r., RSC 1, 2, Sear 418, 3.05g, clear VG. Vercingetorix was chief of the Averni tribe and led a revolt against Julius Caesar, beating him at the Battle of Gergovia in 52 BC. In the same year he lost at the Battle of Alesia and gave himself up to save his men. He was held prisoner for five years, then paraded through the streets of Rome as part of Caesar's Triumph and afterwards executed by strangulation in his cell.
