Pierre Jules Mene (French, 1810-79), 'Ecossais montrant un renard a son chien' and 'Valet de chiens tenant deux griffons Ecossais', a pair of bronze figure groups depicting a Scottish hunter holding aloft a dead fox and a ghillie holding a pair of deerhounds, each raised on a circular base, both signed 'P J Mene', 50cm
NB: Illustrated in Michel Poletti 2007 Catalogue Raisonne pg. 34, pl. 21 and pg 35, pl. 22. Mene was a prolific animalier sculptor of the 19th Century. He had a reputation for high quality work, being awarded the Cross Legion d'Honneur for contributions to art in 1861, and first class medals at the London Exhibitions of 1855 and 1861. His work is clearly influence by Landseer and these particular sculptures were originally cast in 1861 and 1864 respectively
Both bronzes are in good condition overall, however the ghillie holding the fox aloft has the plumes to his hat detached, but they are present.
No further damages found. The patina is generally dark brown with slight polishing at the extremities. The signatures are clear on the bases.
