A Russian wooden icon of "The Joy Of All Who Sorrow" (Vsekh Skorbyashcikh Radost). The rectangular panel with gilt raised borders the ground showing the Holly Mother surrounded by supplicants; the sick, bereft and the needy with their pleas for assistance in the form of scrolls held aloft, painted in lacquer colours on a gilt flake ground. 32 cm x 27 cm
In the ikon, the Mother of God is shown in glory in the centre surrounded by supplicants, the sick, the suffering, the poor, the bereaved and people who are in need or sorrow. On either side of the Mother of God are angels who are directing the petitions to her. Another version of this Ikon of the same name is known, in which the Virgin is unaccompanied by Christ and stands alone in a mandorla.
