From the Collection of Admiral Grindall, an Able Seaman aboard Captain Cook’s Resolution during his second circumnavigation and later in command of Prince at the Battle of Trafalgar; thence by direct descent through his family.

A blue winged-scarab with associated wings.
This winged scarab consists of three pieces: a scarab beetle and two separately made wings. The wings are those of a bird, as is apparent by their shape and the indication of individual feathers.

Winged scarabs, meant to guarantee the rebirth of the deceased, were very popular funerary amulets.

Compare with the very fine example in the MET Museum (Accession Number: 30.8.1082a-c).
