Imperial Russian Silver Mounted Shaska. A good late 19th early 20th century example with a 30 1/4 inch single edged curved blade. The hilt with a polished horn grip surmounted by a silver embossed pommel with floral and niello decoration. This decoration is repeated to the silver mounts of the black leather scabbard. Overall GC minor age wear ... Accompanied by a small photograph of Major Frederick William Sharpe MBE, DCM, Order of St.Slanislaus RAMC who is believed to have been given the sword during his service in South Russia ... Also a 20th Century Sudanese style dagger and scabbard (3 parts) The Shaska was presented to the family of the vendor circa 1940 by Major Frederick William Sharpe MBE, DCM, Order of St.Slanislaus RAMC and is believed to have been given to him during his service in South Russia.
Major Sharpe landed in France on the 24th August 1914 serving as Quarter Master Sergeant with the 12 General Hospital. He was awarded the DCM in March 1916 for gallantry under fire. Commissioned in May 1916 as a Quartermaster Lieutenant he volunteered for service in South Russia being awarded the MBE in 1920 and the Order of St.Slanislaus.
