German painter and graphic artist of the 20th century. Representative of Expressionism with impulses of Cubism, Futurism and Pointilism. Worked as a porcelain painter, from 1906 to 1908 at the art academy in Weimar with Ludwig von Hofmann. From 1908 in Berlin, 1910/1911 co-founder of the New Secession and, together with Georg Tappert, established the School for Free and Applied Art. Member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund and the Prague Secession. 1918 Founds the November Group together with Max Pechstein, César Klein, Bernhard Klein, Georg Tappert and Heinrich Richter-Berlin, among others. 1921 to 1943 teacher at the Reimann school. His works were classified as degenerate art by the Nazis in 1937. Numerous works were confiscated and destroyed. Early influences of Italian Renaissance masters, Impressionism and Pointillism. Here, too, in bright hues resolved representation of manneristically elongated figures in unnatural, almost dance-like postures and poses.
