Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Bride descending from the sanctuary, Palermo, Sicily Watercolour, initialled, 36.5 x 49cm. This stunning, yellow baroque church façade overlooking the bay of Palermo was built in the 17th Century as the grand entrance to the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia - an ancient cave shrine buried deep below. St Ives watercolourist Clare White has painted a bride descending the steps after her wedding in its candlelit cave. Most likely painted in the 1960s, the historic scene is filled with White’s joie de vivre.
