Document on vellum, chancery document settling a suit about Inistoige, Kilkenny properties and fishing rights on river Nore, 28 November 1544.
In Latin. 37 lines in a chancery hand on one membrane, 266 × 435mm (minor losses, discolouration and marginal creasing), Deputed Irish Great Seal of Henry VII in brown wax pendant on vellum tag.

Original patent dated 28th November 1544 or the 35th year of the reign of Henry VIII King of England, France and Ireland. Defender of the Faith etc.

Confirms to Myles or Milo [Barron otherwise Fitzgerald] Bishop of Ossory and to David Baron [his brother] Baron of Brownesford various properties in and around Inistioge including the fishing rights on the river Nore.

Milo was the last prior of the Augustinian Priory at Inistioge. In 1528 he was appointed Bishop of Ossory by papal brief, which office he held until his death in 1550. At the Dissolution of religious houses he surrendered the priory at Inistioge with all its possession, some 3,876 acres to the Crown. This occurred on 20th March 1540. In lieu he was granted a yearly pension of £20. When he was appointed bishop he was allowed to retain the office of prior.

The patent recites that a complaint had come from Milo and David Baron to the Rt,. Hon. John Alen the King’s Majesties Lorde Chancellor of the realm of Ireland, in his highnesses High Court of Chancery. The result was a ruling in favour of the brothers whose properties and rights were hereby confirmed by this patent.

Attached to the patent is the completely intact seal which shows Henry VIII enthroned on one side showing the Irish Harp, while the reverse shows the arms of the Henry VIII on a shield supported by the a lion and a dragon representing England and Wales. The shield shows the lion passant of England and the Fleur de Lis of France.
