A Narrative of A Journey To The Shores of The Polar Sea In The Years 1819, 20, 21 and 22 - by John Franklin, Captain, RN FRS. and Commander of the Expedition. Published by authority of the Right Honourable and Earl Bathurst. London. John Murray, Albermarle Street MDCCCXXIII (1823). First Edition. pp. xvi, 768 pages with 4 folding engraved maps each dated March 1823. Plus 30 engraved plates 11 of which are hand-coloured (mostly aquatints). A detailed account of Franklin's first expedition. Including a 5500 mile overland journey exploring the Arctic coast and back, map making, life amongst the Indians and Eskimo etc etc. Expensively rebound in green half leather with fine gold tooling and marble boards, size 9" x 10.75" and 2.5" thick. Also, this book belonged to the 1st Viscount Exmouth, has his bookplate, plus his signature on the dedication page. Admiral Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757-1833) was a second most famous British naval officer after Nelson. He fought during the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the East Indies Station, later Commander-in-Chief, North Sea and then Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet. In 1816, he led an Anglo-Dutch fleet against the Barbary states. Victory at the Bombardment of Algiers secured the release of the 1,200 Christian slaves in the city.
