Both works were illustrated in the weekly newspaper The Graphic, 6th December 1909. Framed together. Indistinctly signed lower right, titled under. Each approx. 7 1/4" x 11" (2)

The Villa Hugel was built by Alfred Krupp between 1870 and 1873. It was home to the Krupp family until after World War II, and opened to the public in 1953 hosting various cultural events. The villa was altered by Friedrich Krupp, his wife, his daughter Bertha and her husband Gustav Krupp von Bohlen who hired the architect Ernst von Ihne to work on the building. The historical family archives are housed in a sixty room Annex known as 'The Little House', which was used after World War II to house members of the British post-war Control Commission in Germany during 1946.
Herr Friedrich Krupp established the steel foundry in 1811. After his death, his family took over the business; in 1848, his son Alfred, later known as Alfred the Great, became the sole owner. The foundry manufactured a variety of products to include steel rollers, train wheels, etc. Alfred acquired mines all over Europe to use the iron ore. They began producing steel cannons in the 1840s for the Russian, Turkish and Prussian armies, and began to specialise in the armaments industry. In the 20thC the Krupp Works became the centre for German rearmament, Essen became a large company town, and Krupp referred to as 'a State within a State'. In 1999 the Krupp group merged with a competitor Thyssen AG, the subsequent company ThyssenKrupp AG became Germany's fifth largest firm and one of the largest steel producers in the world.
