Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, 100 Aspects of the Moon, Ghost Print, Night Scene, Meiji PeriodMoon of the Lonely House from the series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon. Original Japanese Woodblock Print.
Publisher: Hasegawa Tsunejiro
Date: 1890
Dimensions: 24.6 x 35.7 cm

The print depicts a vampiric tale of an old lady who stole around the countryside obtaining the blood of children in order to cure her lord's strange disease. Not only was the story of great interest to Yoshitoshi and his teacher, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, but it was also used as material for many reinterpretations in both Noh and Kabuki theatre. In this scene, Yoshitoshi has the old lady peering round the doorway, menacingly searching out her victim. It is understood that in her right hand is the knife she uses in order to carry out her murders. Through this series, Yoshitoshi explores the range of tones and emotions heightened by moonlight, and here pays a particular attention to the grotesque.
