Atmosphere is the word of choice when stepping into one of John Meyers works. The artist’s paintings are innately representational, and Meyer bases the style of his works on theories of realism, so they are often loose depictions of existing places. Each intentional stroke layers to create a scene that is a pleasing depiction of a familiar place, whilst also creating tension and emotion that draws the viewer in. The emotion that is evoked through his creation of mood and atmosphere leaves enough room for viewer perception, which is where the meaning in his work is truly born. The viewer’s relationship with the space evolves with further inspection and judgement, giving Meyer’s works a fluidity in their evolving meaning. The complexity of Meyer’s work essentially surrounds a need for retrospection and introspection, and as rarely are interpretations the same, the creation of that place takes shape in the viewer’s mind, resulting in inherently unique spaces. In this way, Meyer describes his works as being ‘made’. “He presents us with strikingly real illusions, all distinctly familiar, yet ultimately invented” (Everard Read).

Meyer is a master of light, and uses dramatic shadows and glimmering highlights to further enforce the emotional tension in his spaces. His precise layering and tight control over the painted surface means very little emotion is translated through the strokes themselves, but this perhaps presents the emotional ambiguity required for individual relationships to form between the viewers and the work. In this way, Meyer can be seen as a master of both landscapes and narratives, which makes his works truly unique. The artist describes his process and the endless possibilities in terms of meaning: “One could say I’m obsessed with the magical properties of paint, with the process that allows for and unlocks the magic. It all depends on where you direct your energy”.
