Fees

John Henry Mohrmann (1857-1916) Belgian/Canadian. The Full-Rigged Ship Oakworth Under All Plain Sail, Oil on canvas, Signed, 23.5" x 39.5" (59.7 x 100.3cm). Notes: The Oakworth was driven ashore and wrecked by strong gales whilst anchored in Algoa Bay, South Africa in 1902. Mohrmann was born in San Francisco of German emigrant parents but went to sea at an early age, rounding Cape Horn before his fourteenth birthday. He gradually developed a talent for ship portraiture and from around 1880 worked as a picture restorer in England. In 1890 he settled in Antwerp and his recorded ship portraits date from the following year. He emigrated to Canada in 1913 and died three years later.
