THE NARRATIVE OF ROBERT ADAMS (FIRST EDITION, 1816) by Robert Adams

More Information

London: John Murray, 1816

4to, xxxix + 231pp. Original half leather hardcover binding, 4 raised bands, marbled boards. With a fine fold-out map of North and West Africa at front of book.

One of the very few accounts of whites sold into slavery. Adams sailed on the Charles from New York, bound for Gibraltar. The ship was blown off course and wrecked on the West Coast of Africa, where the crew were enslaved by Arabs and both the Captain and Mate were killed. Adams was taken to Timbuctoo, where he spent several months, before being ransomed by the British Consul, Mr Dupuis, at Mogadore. His account is one of the first to describe the city. Although initially thought to be a hoax, the work's details were verified by both Banks and Barrow.
