* This piccolo was famously played by Ray Swinfield on the sound track of Penny Lane by the Beatles
Amongst the instruments Ray owned, he had those which were his favourites and that he favoured playing; two of these were the Haynes Concert Flute 30269 (lot 1641) and this Gemeinhardt Piccolo, both of which he played on the Beatles’ “Penny Lane” and on many other significant recordings and live appearances.
Bob Sydor, Ray’s close friend and musical colleague, also a consummate performer on woodwinds, shared with Ray their many performing experiences; he too, is familiar with the flutes used by Ray on “Penny Lane”.
** It was also played on the theme tune of 'Mr Benn' the 1970's children's animated television series
***Lindy Swinfield (Ray's surviving wife) is happy to provide written confirmation that this piccolo was used on the soundtrack of Penny Lane and 'Mr Benn' children's television series.
