Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) was a geographer and is regarded as the first professor of modern geography at Oxford. He went to great lengths to 'read over whatsoever printed or written discoveries and voyages,' He acquainted himself with captains, mariners and merchants such as Martin Frobisher and Humphrey Gilbert. He consulted cartographers such as Abraham Ortelius and Geradus Mercator
