A large 18th Century manuscript indenture / deeds on vellum relating to the rental / purchase of a premises for brewing in Abingdon (then Berkshire). Highly detailed hand written manuscript in calligraphic letters with wax seal stamp to the bottom. Folded. Measures approx 83x75cm in two parts.
Anthony Claxson was the Master Brewer who was renting property from Edward Wolston/Mary Wolston on 17th Oct 1728 in Abingdon . He must have been connected to the Morland Brewery in Abingdon which was started by John Morland in 1711. John Morland proceeded to buy up other breweries during his life time and expand the business. Abingdon became a hub for brewing beer. In 1860 Morland bought Abbey Brewery and Eagle Brewery and changed their name to United Brewery. In 1944 the Brewery changed its name back to Moreland brewery. The main brewery was in Ock Street Abingdon. Moreland became a huge company with 100's of pubs and hotels throughout the UK. In 2000 Green King bought out Moreland and eventually the Ock St brewery was sold for redevelopment and is now flats...
