Note: Simpson was commissioned by Colnaghi and Co to travel to the Crimea in 1854 to record the war, and became known as ‘Crimean Simpson’. He made sketches at Balaklava and Sevastopol. These watercolours were published as lithographs in The Seat of War in the East 2 volumes, 80 plates, 1855-56, dedicated to Queen Victoria.
