Two albums of photographs taken by RAF Flt/Lt S. N. Walker CBE during his service with 84 and 27 squadrons.
One album contains approximately 120 photographs taken in Iraq and Egypt from 1928-1930, subjects including group portraits of the squadron, its Westland Wapiti and DH9C aircraft, visiting dignitaries (including Viscount Sir Samuel Hoare), aerial photographs taken of the Iraqi airfields. Also features a collection of photographs taken by Walker during a visit to the British Museum’s archaeological excavations at Ur in Mesopotamia, including a photograph of Sir Charles Leonard Wooley, the expedition’s organiser and chief archaeologist. Other images feature scenic and city scenes of Iraq and Egypt.
Second album comprises approximately 76 photographs taken in India, Pakistan and the North West Frontier during service with 27 Squadron in the early 1930s. Scenes include Squadron portraits and activities including parachute supply drops, air-to-air photography of the unit’s machines, aerial reconnaissance photographs of outposts and forts as well as views of Murree, Kohat, Delhi and surrounding areas.
