Fine Pair of Bougainville Province Figures, Solomon Islands. Carved and engraved hardwood and natural pigment. Figures like this pair were created in the early 20th century in the tradition of the marriage related Kaisa figures carved on Buka. On Bougainville however, they were also carved in this realistic form although were not used to mark a marriage as on Buka. This particular pair is a very finely carved pair and rare in that the female carries a bundle of wood on her back and the male has a paddle in his hands. They both have incised arm bands (she has neck patterns incised) and finely detailed pubic covers above straight legs and finely carved feet on circular base. Both have serene expressions and red coiffure. Approx Female L38cm, Male L37cm. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
