c50 BC Celtic Belgae Mossop Cruciform type gold AV Quarter Stater: excessively rare (ABC 797, Mossop 18). Obverse: central sunburst motif, depicted like the head of a dandelion with cruciform points emitting and flowers or stars in two of the angles and crescents in the others. Reverse: the front end of an annulate horse with the edge of a wheel beneath, feather or wreath detail in front and annulets between. Weight: 0.98g. Diameter: 9.8mm. Grade: VF - minor flan stress flaws, probably struck with rusted dies: Very Fine.The people who made these coins lived in modern Hampshire and were probably an offshoot of the tribal confederation from northern Gaul, who settled in Britain in the late 2nd or early 1st century BC. Rudd's Ancient British Coins records 84 types of Belgae coins, the most common being Chute-type gold Staters. This type is very scarce, with only a few examples known.
