** THE 7 YEARS WAR - GOBBÉ CORRESPONDENCE - TOPSHAM (DEVON) P.O.W. CAMP COVER TO FRANCE; Fine 3 Dec. 1758 EL (unsealed - as per censor regulations?) from "Gobbe de la Gaudinais" (for the first time identifying himself as the "Pilot of the Corsaire 'Le Mesnil-Montant' of Nantes") in "La Prison de Tapson [= Topsham] proche Excetere" to his father in Redon mentioning that he had not heard from his parents for 28 months while in prison. It would have been sent by the Camp authorities by a special cartel vessel (from Exmouth?) and was handed into the P.O. at "S.MALO" (poor s. line on the front) and charged "4" (internal French rate). The P.S. includes; If you write to me address my letter to Mr. Limbry, Commissioner of prisoners of war at Exeter for him to send it on to the Prison at Tapson [Topsham], and you must pay the postage to the port of departure from the Kingdom [France] and on no account tell me anything about the War.... Rare 7 Years War cover from a British POW Camp. [See MFPWE, p. 47.] Cross Reference: MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, DEVON, FRANCE
