ABOUT ARTIST
Tumisang Khalipha is a South African contemporary visual artist and professional photographer. He was born in 1994 in Mahikeng, a small village in the Northwest province of South Africa. In 2003, Khalipha relocated to Johannesburg, spending much of his childhood in Katlehong, one of the largest townships in South Africa, with his parents and brother. After high school he studied printmaking at Artist Proof Studio under the mentorship of Sharon Sampson, co-founder of The South African Fine Art Print Fair (FAP).
Deeply inspired by his rural upbringing where the scarcity of adequate sanitation has plagued the community for decades, much of Khalipha’s work explores the complexity of water with respect to the human condition; the power it possesses as a natural elixir, the majesty of its movement, its ability to create, and equally marvellous ability to destroy. Water being an integral part of his painting technique as well, Khalipha has described the irresponsible treatment of water by humans as “the loss of inner peace” that he hopes to help restore through his work.
