RARE 1847 5c COVER TO HOLLAND VIA BOSTON, LONDON & OSTEND EX PHILADELPHIA WITH BLUE GRID CANCEL; Fine 16 Sept. 1850 EL (ref. an order for nutmeg) from "Philadelphia" to Amsterdam (from the well known Alstorphius & Von Hemert correspondence) endorsed to go by "Cunard Steamer from Boston to Lpool" with 1847 5c Orange-Brown (4 close to huge margins, but outer frame-line just touched at bottom centre) just tied by a rather unclear blue Philadelphia circular grid matching the fine "PHILADA PA./5 cts" cds alongside, charged "1/8" (British transit) and then "130" (Dutch arrival charge) with London (30 Sept.) and Amsterdam (2 Oct., with fair red oval "ENGELAND/OVER OSTENDE" alongside) backstamps. Listed in the Alexander census; one of only 23 1st-Issue 5c covers recorded to Holland. Exhibition Quality.
