Henry Ralph Rokeby (1788-1870) entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1801 aboard the Royal George (100) and was present at Calder's Action in the run-up to Trafalgar in July 1805. He passed for lieutenant in 1808 and was raised Commander in June 1815 which is when this portrait was likely commissioned. He left the Navy in 1830 and was ordained into the Church becoming Rector of Arthingworth in Northamptonshire and then Lord of the Manor in 1844 upon his brothers' death.
