JAPAN. DARK NAVY BLUE RIBBON MERIT MEDAL IN CASE OF ISSUE Japan. Dark Navy Blue Ribbon Merit Medal (Konjuhosho) with lapel stick pin, in fitted embossed black lacquer case of issue, awarded 1963.

This example bears a silver bar inscribed 'Showa 38 June 19th' ( = AD1963) in Japanese characters. The Medal was created by Imperial Edict No. 349 of 19 September 1918 to be awarded to those who contribute their private fortunes to public welfare. Unlike all other merit medals, the reverse of the Dark Navy Blue Ribbon Merit Medal is never inscribed with a character meaning ‘to’ nor with the name of the recipient.
