A RARE AND PROVENANCED SET OF TWELVE CAROLEAN HIGH BACK CHAIRS, LITTLECOTE HOUSE, BERKSHIRE, CIRCA 1660-1680. The high back Long Gallery chairs with raised C scroll crestings centred by a cross, flanked by turned finials above baluster and ball turned uprights with multi slat arched backs, above deep circular dished seats with moulded rails, bold scroll carved and splayed front legs joined by baluster and reel turned lower stretchers throughout., 135cm high and 40cm wide. Note - This style of sophisticated chair rose in fashion to prominence after the restoration of Charles II, with a return to use of the Elizabethan style Long Gallery, large sets of chairs were commissioned for use therein. Provenance - Littlecote House, Berkshire. Purchased directly from Sir Seton Wills bt., prior to the Sothebys House sale of 1985.
