Three modern albums (one pictured) containing a collection of a total of approximately 580 postcards (two of the albums are not full) – including some postcard-size images on card or photographic paper – mainly of Portsmouth and Southsea. There are also some of neighbouring areas including Gosport, Cowplain, Waterlooville, Hayling Island, and Chichester; and a few unrelated topographic cards of places like Clacton-on-Sea. But the majority of the collection is Portsmouth. There are a number of common views such as HMS Victory, the Guildhall and Victoria Park area, Charles Dickens’ birthplace, Southsea seafront, the Rock Gardens, the Royal Naval Barracks, Ladies Mile and Anglican Cathedral. But there is also a good selection of cards of The Camber (see image), Hilsea Lido (see photo), the Cosham area including Queen Alexandra Hospital and from the top of Portsdown Hill – including printed cards of the fair that used to be held there. There are seven real photographic cards of the wreck of HMS Gladiator, which was towed into the dockyard after a collision off the Isle of Wight. And there are some lovely street views – such as the two images (which are not postcards) of Highland Road and Greetham Street (see photograph); and a number of postcards of Fratton and the Kingston Road area before the road was widened in 1934 (four are pictured). There are some postcards by Pamlins and a number of printed cards by M Snape, known for his drawings of the Old Portsmouth and harbour area (see photo for an example of his work).
