Attributed to George Jones RA (1786-1869) View of the Scaligeri tombs, Verona inscribed George Jones to stretcher oil on canvas,28 x 22cm George 'Waterloo' Jones fought in the Napoleonic wars and subsequently became a successful painter of battle scenes. While he remains best-known as a military painter, Jones is also known to have painted a series of 'picturesque towns of the Continent'. It is possible that the two lots presented here were part of such a series. Similar Continental townscapes by Jones are in the collection of the Royal Academy, London (that example a scene of Malines, Belgium), and the Tate (view of Utrecht). Two other Venetian scenes by Jones appeared at auction in the United States in 2011 (David Rago, 3/12/2003, lots 679 and 681).
